Aakash Tablet was launched in October 2011 by Union Minister Kapil Sibal. It’s by far the cheapest tablet PC in the world. The actual cost of the Aakash Tablet is Rs. 2500. With an aim to make education via technology affordable and available for everyone in the country, the Indian Government has planned to provide Aakash tablet at a discount of more than 50% to students of more than 100 universities in India. Among these 100, Mumbai University will be the first one to receive the much awaited Aakash tablet PC.

Times of India has reported that Mumbai University has already issued circulars to departments and colleges affiliated to it to provide the number of Aakash tablets each of them requires. Interestingly, Datawind, the key company behind developing Aakash tablet is coming up with an improved version of Aakash tablet called as UbiSlate which is scheduled to be launched towards the end of January 2012 . Pre-booking for UbiSlate has already started. So, Mumbai University students are expected to get the upgraded UbiSlate tablet rather than the Aakash tablet.

Students who want to avail this opportunity of getting the amazing Aakash tablet at Rs. 1,138 have to approach their college authorities for the same. We have learned that over the next few months, the Aakash tablet shall be made available to students of other universities too at the discounted prices .

UbiSlate has a Cortex A8 – 700 Mhz microprocessor with Wi-Fi and GPRS features too. It’s powered by Android 2.3 (GingerBread).
