Aakash 2 all set to be launched in April 2012

Aakash II Tablet to be launched in April 2012Ever since the upgraded version of Aakash tablet was announced as Aakash 2 or commercially called UbiSlate 7+, there’s been ambiguity about its launch and availability. DataWind and MHRD Ministry both have had various versions as to the launch of this low cost tablet computer and its expected delivery schedule. However, among all the various dates, the Government has announced the ‘official’ launch of Aakash 2 in April 2012.

This is a rather quick update to a gadget in a very short period of time and more so for a device having Government involvement. Aakash 1 was announced in October 2011, only a few months back. So the announcement to launch Aakash 2 in April 2012 is very quick but not all that surprising.

Aakash 1, after it was announced and being ready for delivery, was initially distributed to IIT Rajasthan and a select few colleges for evaluation. After the actual use of the 30,000 odd Aakash tablets distributed to these institutions, the initial feedback on the Aakash tablet was warm, but pointed out to some genuine shortcomings of the tablet as well. Keeping this in mind, the Government and DataWind along with  various agencies associated with the project decided to quickly address the issues with the tablet and announced a new revamped version of the low cost tablet, which led to the announcement of Aakash 2.

Aakash 2 would boast of a 700 MHz processor as opposed to the 366 MHz of the Aakash 1. The RAM would be same at 256 MB but with a slight performance enhancement, while the battery capacity is prepped up from 2100 m AH to 3200 m AH. Also the new version would run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than previous Android 2.2 Froyo. This would give the tablet a stable and improved performance. Aakash 2 also has 3G modem and webcam functionality via its USB port and a SIM card slot, giving it full phone functionality among other changes.

It is clear that the Government and also the manufacturer of Aakash Tablet, DataWind are pretty serious with the Aakash project – an amibitious project aimed at empowering primarily the students of the country with technology in their hands at an affordable price tag andat the same time empowering the masses to get a slice of affordable touchscreen technology. This is primarily the reason why the Government announced a budget of Rs. 765 crores for the Aakash project, further giving the whole project a momentum. All these reasons have put the Aakash 2 project on the fast track and the Government of India has announced that Aakash Tablet 2 will be launched  in April 2012.

Bookings of the Aakash 2 have already been in full swing and it can be booked via the DataWind website for the masses and through the colleges of various State Universities for the students at highly subsidized rates.
