Karbonn Smart Tab 1 [Vs] HCL ME U1 [Vs] Micromax Funbook – Which Tablet to Buy?

Since, the announcement of the Aakash Tablet, India has been transformed into sort of a heaven for low cost tablets. A lot of Indian companies are jumping at this new opportunity to get ahead in the race and build a strong hold in this, kind of a niche market for low cost computing devices. Companies like Zync, iBerry, iBall, Wish Tel, BSNL, Karbonn, Micromax, HCL and even corporate biggies like Reliance have entered this space.

The pricing is neck and neck and competitive and features are one better than the other in some, while some keep some and leave some, thus leading to a lot of confusion among prospective buyers as to which tablet to buy and what factors to consider. To ease the head-scratching, here’s a comparison between three of the more popular low cost tablets currently in the market, namely Karbonn Smart Tab 1, Micromax Funbook and HCL U1.

As we discussed in the beginning, the pricing is neck and neck and some tablets give up on certain features or some retain a few features but compromise on the hardware. Same is evident in the three tablets above. All of them have Android 4.0.3, ICS operating system, which is the latest and all of them have a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen and 512 MB RAM with all standard connectivity features from WIFI to USB and all give up on Bluetooth. So how do you choose? Well, it all boils down to the differences and ever so slight those maybe, ultimately it reflects on the overall tablet experience.

Karbonn Smart Tab 1 - Tablet PCsThe first noticeable difference is the processor, with Karbonn and Micromax offering 1.2 GHz and the HCL ME U1 offering 1 GHz. This however may not be such a major performance difference as 0.2 GHz may not result in such a major performance difference in most cases.

Secondly, the camera; and Karbonn is the only one with a substantial lead in this one with 2 MP front facing camera, so that is something worth considering. All cameras can be used for video chats and taking self-portraits, so a 2MP would go a long way in clicking a decent and acceptable snap.

Lastly, the internal storage on the HCL ME U1 and Micromax Funbook is at 4 GB, while in case of Karbonn, the company simply says expandable up to 32 GB like all others are. This obviously means the internal storage on the Karbonn may not be all that great or else the company would have displayed it in bold. Internal memory is crucial as the Apps that you install would take up quite a bit of internal storage and one would need at least 2GB of internal storage, for a tablet to be able to run smoothly even after it is bombarded with games and apps by the user. Karbonn seems to lose out on the storage front for sure. But it is worth noting that a lot of high end smart phones too have less internal storage and the way around is Apps-to-SD card applications that can free your limited internal memory. So it may not be a major problem after all.

HCL Me U1 Tablet PC IndiaHowever, the other more crucial factor to consider among all the features is the battery life. You most certainly would not want to have a tablet that performs well but works as a wired desktop PC, due to it needing constant charging, right? Portable devices the world over have had to bear the brunt of poor battery backups and tablets are no exception, especially the low cost ones. However, as they say ‘to make the most of what you have’, in the above chart the Micromax loses to both HCL and Karbonn by a long way.

All factors considered, the price not being too off, the better tablet to choose is slightly tricky. Keeping all in perspective the Micromax Funbook scores on all front but loses out on battery, while the HCL has the highest price and the lowest processor speed and no Google App Store. Karbonn could be the winner in among all these if the internal storage is prepped up as all the other specs are top notch considering its low cost and the market segment it is placed in. The battery capacity is the highest and has the best of what Micromax and the HCL have to offer.

Review of New Micromax Funbook ICS TabletAll said and done, if limited internal storage is not a deterrent and you are willing to have to move your installed apps to the SD card, then Karbonn Smart Tab 1 is a strong tablet, which is the best of the lot. If you are one of those who do not want to worry about internal memory filling up, Micromax Funbook at its price of Rs. 6499 could be the right choice. Sadly, even the strong branding of the HCL and being a very good tablet is not able to be on top of this showdown, due to its high pricing, slower and older processor and lack of Google App store.
