Difference between Aakash Tablet and Ubislate Tablet?

There has been lot of speculation and confusion surrounding Aakash, the low cost tablet computer from India, manufactured and supplied by Datawind, and the Government of India. The confusion has been in terms of its specs, to its delivery date to its booking process to even the version names, sometimes heard as Aakash, Aakash 2 and so on. One such confusion that has bugged many of us is the interchanging name, causing confusion between Ubislate and Aakash and while both have similar specs they have different booking and availability options. So let’s clear the air a bit, shall we?

Aakash is the name given by the Government of India, mainly the MHRD ministry to the student version of the low cost Android tablet computer, manufactured and distributed in collaboration with a London based tech company Datawind, founded by brothers of Indian origin Mr. Suneet Singh Tuli and Mr. Raja Tuli who introduced the tablet under the name Ubislate, which is the commercial name of the tablet.

The Ubislate was initially intended to be a low cost tablet computer to be made available to the masses and mainly students who cannot afford the high end iPads, palybooks, or even the other Android tablets available in the market. The tablet had initially very modest tech specs with Android 2.2 running over a 366 MHz processor with 256 MB RAM, 2GB inbuilt storage and WIFI only. This was introduced as the first Aakash tablet, the student version to be available for Rs. 2500, but eventually made available to the students at 50% subsidized price. The same was available to the commercial buyer at Rs. 2999 under the name Ubislate 7 at an upgraded 700 MHz processor running Android 2.3, 256 MB RAM, WIFI + GPRS.

While the Aakash was made available for booking via various Universities and colleges for the students who could avail of the special 50% discount on the tablet, Ubislate was only available via the company’s official site, and it did not have any special discount. These tablets, both the student and commercial version are now available at updated specs and at slightly higher price as Aakash 2 and Ubislate 7Ci, Ubislate 7C+, Ubislate 7Cz.

Aakash Tablet, Aakash 2 and Ubislate Tablet different?

The updated Aakash 2 would be made available at a subsidized rate of Rs. 1150 for the students while the Ubislate 7Ci, which is the exact commercial version of the Aakash 2 is available for booking via the official sites www.ubislate.com and www.aakashtablet.com from Rs. 4499. As mentioned above Ubislate comes in 3 variations costing up to Rs. 5999. The Aakash 2 and the Ubislate 7Ci come with 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB internal memory, VGA front camera, WIFI with mini USB slot for connecting 3G modem and other devices and runs on Android 4.0.3. The Ubislate 7C+ costs Rs. 4999 and while other specs remain the same, it comes with sim card functionality and is WIFI+GPRS. The Ubislate 7Cz is the most expensive at Rs. 5999 and has GPRS+WIFI and Dual Camera with Bluetooth as well. The availability of the Aakash 2 is still unclear but the Ubislates are available for shipping from within 48 hours of payment receipt for pre-paid orders and up to 8-12 weeks for Cash on delivery options.

So, as seen above the difference between the Aakash and Ubislate is mainly in terms of its students and commercial version, pricing, availability and some added specs. Both are pretty similar, however the Aakash is mainly for the students and enjoys the Government subsidy while Ubislates are for the commercial buyer and do not have any subsidies.
