List of various Low cost Android tablets in India – Part II

Low cost tablet is a relative term and as such it is up to the buyer as to what he/she feels low cost. For some an iPAD can be a low cost device and for some even the new Aakash tablet PC available at Rs. 4499 can be expensive. So as to classify the low cost tablets in India, we shall consider the top tablets which are the lowest in its class and not merely focus on the pricing or the country where they originate. We shall not just look at the Indian tablets but the tablets available in India, irrespective of whether they are Indian tablet manufacturers of foreign players.

We shall start with entry level devices based on the tablet prices in India and go towards the higher end devices that are priced the lowest in their respective segment.

  • Aakash tablet PC: No list of low cost tablets can miss the Aakash tablet or the Ubislate, by Datawind. Priced higher at Rs. 4499 and available in its commercial avatar as Ubislate 7Ci, the tab comes with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich OS running on a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. It is a 7 inch tablet with capacitive touch screen and comes with WIFI and USB connectivity options. 3G is available via external USB dongle and it has a front VGA camera. The processor is 1.2 GHz and the RAM is 512 MB. Internal storage is at 4 GB with micro SD card expansion up to 32 GB. HD videos will play hassle free and the Google Playstore will allow access to the world of Android apps and games. WIFI, USB, HDMI, 3.5 mm audio jack give a rich connectivity spectrum. 3G is available via external USB dongle and the tablet is capable of connecting external USB devices like thumb drives, keyboards etc via the USB on-the-go cable it is shipped with. Battery life is good and the screen is pretty impressive though not the best. It has two stereo speakers on the either side of the screen and has a 2 MP rear and VGA front camera.

  • Karbonn ST8 Volex and Karbonn ST10 Cosmic: Shifting our focus on to the dual core range from the entry level basic devices, the ST8 by Karbonn is priced at Rs. 6600 and has an 8 inch capacitive touch screen. It runs Android Jelly Bean OS and has a dual core 1.5 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. The internal storage is 1.5 GHz and has 1.5 GB internal storage which is expandable up to 32 GB. The rear camera is 3 MP and the front is a VGA. The tablet has screen resolution of 1024 x 768. The Cosmic is identical to the above and hence clubbed with the Volex with only difference being the screen size and cameras. The Cosmic has a 9.7 inch screen and the rear camera is 2 Mp. Price for the Cosmic is at Rs. 9,500.

  • Zync Z1000: Getting into the Rs. 10,000 price segment and voice calling tablets, we meet this 9.7 inch tablet by Zync. The tablet is a Jelly Bean flavored device running on a single core 1.5 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. What makes this single core device special are its internal memory and its calling features along with connectivity options that cover all corners such as WIFI, USB, HDMI and Bluetooth. The tablet comes with 8 GB internal storage, which can be expanded and SIM CARD slot supporting 2G and 3G networks. This device is a good buy also for the freebies it offers such as lycra pouch, screen guard, earphones and 1 month free subscription to BIGFLIX out of the box along with the already solid specs.

  • iBall Slide i9072: Low cost tablets in the Rs. 15,000 price range are the one’s where all the power lies in terms of features and better hardware. Priced at Rs. 14,500 the iBall Slide i9702 is a dual core tablet with 1.5 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM similar to the Karbonn Cosmic above. However the superiority of the iBall isn’t matched by Karbonn’s low pricing. iBall is the first budget tab offering an IPS display panel for its 9.7 inch screen, which gives it superior viewing angles and much crisp and bright colors. Moreover it has dual cameras, both 2 MP shooters and comes with a whopping 8000 m AH battery. The internal storage is also generous at 8 GB allowing for further expansion via micro SD card. It currently runs Android ICS but is upgradeable to Jelly Bean. Connectivity options include WIFI, USB, USB on-the-go, HDMI.

  • iBerry Auxus Core X4 3G: Again the lowest price in its segment, iBerry Auxus Core x4 3G is the is a Quad Core tablet available for just Rs. 15,500. Moreover the tablet has voice calling features that support both 2G and 3G networks. It has a 1.6 GHz Exynos Quad core processor and 2 GB of RAM with 16 GB internal storage expandable up to 64 GB. Sounds too good to be true, isn’t it? The only gripe with the tablet is that it is still Android ICS but is slated for an update. The camera is 2MP at the back and VGA in the front. HDMI, Bluetooth, WIFI and even GPS all chip in for connectivity. This is indeed a true value for money tablet.

  • Only Google Nexus 7  running Vanilla Jelly Bean has similar features but is a 7 inch device costing Rs, 3,000 more without calling features and the storage cannot be expanded. For the brand conscious however Nexus 7 is still a very good buy and is low cost in its segment, no doubt.

  • iPAD MINI: ‘Your iPAD, just slightly smaller’, is how it is presented as and this is what it actually is. The iPAD mini is offered at Rs. 21,000 and though not low cost by other standards, it is much cheaper in terms of any iPAD you come across. It has a 7.9 inch IPS display and a 1 GHz dual core processor with 512 MB RAM with 16 GB internal storage and WIFI only. The camera is 5 MP with Full HD video capture and 1.2 MP on the front. As with all things Apple, you do not get it all. You cannot expand your storage nor do you get a retina display and it is WIFI only and no 3G support even via any 3G dongle. You need to shell out more cash for 3G and extra storage space. Value for money? Well NO for many and YES for a lot of Apple fans. But with its shortcomings the iPAD MINI is still a solid Apple device and a steal at this price.
